Kitcha Tembo

The Masai Mara National Reserve is part of a huge conservation area that

also includes the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in neighbouring Tanzania. With no fences or man-made barriers, wildlife can move freely throughout this area, constantly recreating an ageless natural cycle. Located on a private concession leased from Maasai landlords in the western Mara, Kichwa Tembo lies directly in the path of the Great Migration. Immortalised through famous tales of olden day safaris, the Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the richest and most diverse wildlife areas in the world. Known as the ‘spotted land’ to the Maasai, the reserve is home to a vast number of resident wildlife, as well as part of the annual phenomenon of the Great Migration.

 

The accommodation

Laid out along the banks of the Sabaringo River on the edge of the

Oloololo escarpment, Kichwa Tembo Masai Mara Tented Camp looks out onto the seemingly endless plains of the Masai Mara. Set on a private concession leased from Masai landlords in the less populated northern part of the Mara, the camp offers total seclusion coupled with abundant wildlife. Forty spacious tents, twelve of them luxury suites, are laid out in immaculate grounds, with leisurely groups of warthog feeding right outside the tent doors.

Classic safari interiors illuminated by soft lantern light open up onto majestic African landscapes.Each suite offers an en suite bathroom with stone shower, flagstone floors and soft lighting. Spacious private verandas provide a shady

viewpoint onto the magnificent grasslands or the wooded banks of the Sabaringo River. Hammocks strung in the grounds or around the gracious swimming pool invite you for an afternoon nap. The best way of ending a safari day is at their boma where chilled drinks are served and the best hors d'ouvres.

 

 

Things to do

Hippo trail

This walking trail offers an exciting opportunity to explore the wilderness on foot, through the

plains, riverine forest, savannah grasslands and bush land surrounding Kichwa Tembo and on to the Mara River. Watch as blue monkey and redtail monkey cavort in the forest canopy, and discover the many fascinating frogs, birds and insects that inhabit the riverside reeds. Admire the colourful birds and butterflies darting among the lianas and listen to Maasai legends about the huge figs that grow here.   

Oloolo Escarpment Trail

The Oloololo Escarpment trail leads from the camp to the top of the escarpment, from where you view the Mara reserve, the Mara river and riverine forest. Rising up to 500 metres above the plains, on a clear day the spectacular view can cover the entire reserve. Guests strolling along the escarpment may encounter mountain reedbuck, klipspringer and rock hyrax. Beautiful bird species dart among the the thick acacia scrub on the top of the plateau.
